An Indian chief had three daughters, or Squaws and demanded that the men of his tribe present him with the hides of animals to earn his daughter’s hands in marriage.
The chief gave away his first daughter for a beaver hide.
The chief gave away his second daughter for the hide of a large buck.
And because the chief loved his third daughter the most, he only gave her away for the hide of a giant hippopotamus.
For he proclaimed:
The Squaw of the the first hide plus the Squaw of the second hide is equal to the Squaw of the hippopotamus.
